Foreign and local investors continue to develop 'protected ground' horticulture in the region. For the year, the total area of greenhouses in the Territory increased ten times – from 0.32 hectares in January 2015 to 3.4 hectares in January 2016.

According to the Ministry of Agricultural Production and Development of Agricultural Territories, greenhouses are being constructed in the region by limited liability company APK Vostok, Viktor Butkov (a businessman in the Khabarovsk Territory), JGC Evergreen, a Russian and Japanese Company, and LLC Future Agrarian Technology that is implementing one of major projects in partnership with Japanese Mirai. The businessmen have scheduled their first planting operations for early spring.

"A brand new protected ground horticulture approach will be used here for our region. The room is completely protected from natural lighting. Such technology allows growing herbaceous crops 1.5 faster as compared to natural conditions", Deputy Head of the Ministry's Agricultural Territories Development Department Alexander Nikulenko said.

According to him, lettuce will be grown in several layers in an area equal to one hectare.

The largest greenhouse project is being implemented in the Territory by JGC Evergreen. This anchor resident of KHABAROVSK priority social and economic development area is completing the first phase of a greenhouse compound in Avangard Industrial Park. The first crop is expected to be received here in early spring at an area of 2.5 hectares.

The compound will use gas as fuel. A mini boiler house, transformer substation and other equipment will allow maintaining optimal air temperature. The investors have already invested RUB 556 million. The project is expected to be implemented in three phases. The area of the greenhouse facility will be increased to 10 hectares in a few years. It will also be used to grow pepper, lettuce and strawberry. At the same time, the Japanese production technology is designed so that only environmentally clean products may be produced.

As Tomouki Igarashi, the CEO of JGC Evergreen, noted, close vicinity to points of sale will allow supplying fresh vegetables directly to distribution networks. The company is now registering its trademark. JGC Evergreen is going to sell its products using its own shop located in the central market of the territorial capital, KhabTIME's reporter was told in the headquarters of the Kahabarovsk Territory Government.
