Russian-Egyptian Trade Beats All-Time Historical High

Trade between Russia and Egypt rose by an impressive 62% to beat the all-time historical high and reach US$6.7bn in 2017, Russia’s Acting Trade Representative to Egypt Nikolai Aslanov told RIA.

According to official Russian customs statistics, Russia’s exports to Egypt amounted to US$6.2bn in 2017 — a whooping 64% on the previous year, while its imports from Egypt totaled US$505, showing an unprecedented 35% increase on 2016.

Russia’s leading exports in 2017 were vehicles which doubled on the previous year and reached US$1.92bn in value terms. Exports of grain rose by 44% to US$1,435bn; metals by 11% to US$703m; oil products, by 35% to US$407m; wood, by 5% to US$282m; and fats and oils, by 48% to US$285.

Egyptian exports to Russia are traditionally dominated by fruit which totaled US$209m in 2017 — a healthy 14% on the previous year; while vegetables almost doubled last year, rising by 97% to US$180m. Egyptian exports of textiles to Russia grew by 7% to US$37m.

The fastest growing Egyptian export to Russia in 2017 was electrical equipment, which surged 7 times from 2016 to US$28m. Another last year’s fast grower was pharmaceuticals which showed a good 48% rise to US$10m.
